Three plural patterns, and no -s anywhere
Italian never adds an s. It changes the final vowel instead, and there are only three patterns: a noun in -o becomes -i, a noun in -a becomes -e, and a noun in -e becomes -i regardless of gender. So gatto gives gatti, gatta gives gatte, and cane gives cani. The article shifts with it: il becomes i, la becomes le, and lo or l’ becomes gli. And because the adjective agrees too, a whole phrase moves together: il gatto nero becomes i gatti neri. Spanish and French both rely on an -s, so among the Latin languages this vowel system is Italian on its own.
