| c’è / ci sono | there is / there are | هست / هستند چِ / چی سونو |
C’è un problema. مشکلی هست. |
Two forms, and the little ci that means "there"
C’è is ci plus è, literally there it is, and ci sono is its plural. Unlike French il y a, which never changes, Italian forces you to count: c’è un balcone but ci sono due balconi. To negate, put non in front exactly as in lesson 25: non c’è il balcone. Note that Italian keeps the article after the negative, where French would collapse it to de — another small mercy. And the same ci turns up meaning there in other sentences: ci vado, I go there.
