Five prepositions that swallow the article

پنج حرف اضافه به‌طور اجباری با حرف تعریف معینی که بعدشان می‌آید ذوب می‌شوند: a، di، da، in و su. الگویش همین که ببینیش منظم است — حرف اضافه را بردار، حرف تعریف را اضافه کن و به هم بچسبان، با این نکته که in به -ne تبدیل می‌شود و حرف مضاعف جایی ظاهر می‌شود که حرف تعریف آن را دارد: a+la می‌شود alla، in+la می‌شود nella، su+lo می‌شود sullo. دو نکته را در نظر بگیر. حرف‌های con و per در ایتالیایی امروزی ذوب نمی‌شوند، پس در نوشتار دقیق con il می‌نویسی نه col. و sotto و dietro و davanti a هم در گروه ذوب‌شونده نیستند، و برای همین می‌گویی sotto il letto با دو کلمهٔ جدا.

Five prepositions fuse obligatorily with a following definite article: a, di, da, in and su. The pattern is regular once you see it — take the preposition, add the article, and glue them, with in becoming ne- and the double letter appearing where the article has one: a+la gives alla, in+la gives nella, su+lo gives sullo. Two things to note. Con and per do not fuse in modern Italian, so you write con il, not col, in careful writing. And sotto, dietro and davanti a are not in the fusing group either, which is why you say sotto il letto with the two words apart.
