Modal plus infinitive, and two very different "can"s
Conjugate the modal, then add any infinitive unchanged, and it sits right next to the modal — no journey to the end of the sentence as in German. The three are irregular in the singular: posso, puoi, può; devo, devi, deve; voglio, vuoi, vuole. One distinction English hides but Italian does not: potere is can in the sense of being allowed or physically able, while sapere is can in the sense of having learned a skill. So posso nuotare means I am allowed to swim today, and so nuotare means I know how to swim at all. Choosing the wrong one changes your meaning completely.
